Finger Numbers, Hand Shape and Posture: Your First Week at the Keyboard

The short answer: thumbs are 1, hands curved and relaxed, forearms level with the keys

On piano and keyboard, your thumb is finger 1 on both hands, your hand should stay curved and relaxed as though gently holding a small ball, and your forearms should run roughly level with the keys rather than angled up or down from the elbow. Get these three things right in the first week and almost everything that follows — reading finger numbers, moving smoothly around the keyboard, avoiding needless tension — gets easier. Get them wrong and they quietly work against you for months, because a hand shape or a wrist habit set in the first few sessions is far easier to build correctly than it is to unlearn later.

Finger numbering: thumbs are 1 on both hands, and it does not match guitar

On piano, every finger has a number, and the numbering is identical on both hands: thumb is 1, index is 2, middle is 3, ring is 4, and pinky is 5. That holds whether the fingering is written for the right hand or the left — a "1" in a left-hand part means your left thumb, exactly as a "1" in a right-hand part means your right thumb. This trips up plenty of students who already play guitar or ukulele, because fretting-hand numbering on those instruments works the opposite way: the index finger is 1, middle is 2, ring is 3, and pinky is 4, with the thumb usually left out of the numbering altogether, since it typically rests behind the neck rather than fretting notes. Carry that guitar habit over to piano without noticing, and it is easy to glance at a "1" in a piece and instinctively reach with your index finger, when piano actually means your thumb. If you already play guitar or ukulele, it is worth consciously flagging this difference to yourself for the first couple of weeks, until piano's numbering becomes its own automatic habit rather than a translation from the other instrument.

Hand shape: the "holding a ball" test

Rest your hand as though you were gently holding a small ball, or cupping your palm over a lightbulb — fingers naturally curved, knuckles slightly raised rather than caved in, the whole hand relaxed rather than flat and stiff. Let your fingertips, not the flat pads, make contact with the keys; that curve is what allows each finger to move somewhat independently of the others instead of dragging the whole hand along with it. A hand pressed flat, with fingers stretched out straight, has almost no room to move without also moving the wrist and forearm along with it. That flat shape is one of the most common habits worth correcting early, since it often feels perfectly natural to a beginner at first and only gets harder to unlearn the longer it goes unnoticed.

Bench height and distance

Sit at a height where your forearms run roughly level with the keys, elbows at close to that same height — not reaching down at the keyboard, and not perched above it either. Too low a bench and your wrist drops below your knuckles while your fingers do work your arm weight should be helping with; too high and you end up riding above the keys and pressing down into them. Distance from the keyboard matters just as much as height: sit close enough that your arms can reach the far ends of the keys without fully straightening, but with enough room that your elbows are not pinned against your sides. If your feet do not comfortably reach the floor once the bench is set to the right height for your arms, a stable footstool under them is worth using, rather than adjusting the bench to suit your feet instead of your arms.

Wrist level, and what a dropped wrist costs you

Your wrist should sit roughly level with, or very slightly above, the top of your hand — not sagging below the knuckles, which is what teachers usually mean by a "dropped" wrist. A dropped wrist restricts how freely your fingers can move independently of each other and tends to build tension over a session, because the hand ends up doing work that a relaxed, level wrist would otherwise support. It is also an easy habit to develop without noticing, especially if the bench sits too low or the keyboard too high, which is part of why bench height and wrist position are worth checking together rather than separately. None of this needs to look rigid or fixed in place — a level wrist should still move a little, naturally, as you play, rather than being locked flat.

Finding your way around the keys: the two-and-three black key groups

You do not need every key memorised by name to find your way around confidently — the black keys do most of that work for you. Look along the keyboard and the black keys are not evenly spaced; they sit in a repeating pattern, a group of two, then a gap, then a group of three, over and over along the full length of the instrument. A C is the white key immediately to the left of any group of two black keys, which means you can find a C anywhere on the keyboard just by spotting that shape, without counting up from the bottom edge every time — middle C is simply the one nearest the middle of the instrument. The same landmark logic extends to every other white key once you know its position relative to a group of two or a group of three, and leaning on it is far faster in week one than memorising every key name in isolation.

What to actually practise in week one

Keep the first week almost entirely about the habits above, not repertoire. Spend real time simply finding notes using the black-key landmarks, one hand at a time, before you go looking for a piece to play. Once that feels comfortable, play a simple five-note pattern — one finger per adjacent white key, right hand first, then left — paying close attention to keeping the curved hand shape and level wrist as you move, rather than to speed. Hands together can wait; most beginners get more out of short, hands-separate repetition in the first week than out of rushing into two-hand coordination before either hand is comfortable alone. Ten or fifteen focused minutes a day, with your attention on shape and finger numbers rather than on covering ground, does more in week one than a longer session with your attention split.

Weighted keys vs unweighted: what it changes for a beginner

Keyboards vary in how much resistance the keys give back when you press them, and that is a genuinely separate thing from whether a keyboard responds to how hard you play. Fully weighted keys — sometimes called hammer-action — are built to feel closer to an acoustic piano. That weighting is often graded, so the lower notes feel heavier than the top, matching what a piano's own mechanism naturally does, though plenty of fully weighted actions keep the same resistance across the whole keyboard. Semi-weighted keys sit in between, offering some resistance without a full hammer action, and unweighted keys are light and springy with the same resistance across the whole instrument, closer to what you would feel on a basic synth. Touch-sensitivity — where pressing harder produces a louder sound and pressing gently produces a softer one — is a separate feature from weighting, and plenty of unweighted keyboards still have it, so the two should not be assumed to go together. For a beginner, the practical difference is mostly about what your fingers are learning: weighted keys ask for more finger strength and give a truer sense of dynamic control from day one, while unweighted keys are physically easier to press, which can suit a very young beginner just starting out, though it usually means an adjustment period later if you move to a weighted instrument. Neither is the wrong place to start, and it is exactly the kind of practical question worth asking in an early keyboard or piano lesson before you settle on what to practise on at home.
